How many locks does the Falkirk Wheel replace?

The Falkirk Wheel replaces a series of eleven (11) locks which lifted (or dropped) boats from a height of 25 metres.

These used to take several hours or the best part of a day to negotiate but now the trip will take in the region of 15 minutes.

These locks were closed in the 1930's.
